Christopher De Lima, Master of Management (Accounting)

“Growing up in Kuala Lumpur, it has always been a dream of mine to live in another city and country. As I was selecting universities for my undergraduate degree, I did not know much about Melbourne or this university. The allure of studying at Australia’s most prestigious university and living in one of the world’s most liveable cities was something I could not resist. It wasn’t long before I found myself dreaming of coming here.

That was in 2014. Fast forward five years, I’ve completed my Bachelor of Commerce and here I am at MBS.

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing. I underestimated how difficult it is to start a life in a new city – an unfamiliar environment. I did not know anyone, and it was challenging for me to be living away from family and friends, on top of trying to navigate my way through a new culture. Looking back, I’m glad I pushed through. I’ve met many amazing people over the years and created many memories. Being here has made me the person I am today and I’m grateful for it.

Similar to the city of Melbourne, one of the best parts of MBS is its people. It is inspiring to be a part of a cohort that is filled with diverse, talented and intelligent individuals and I feel fortunate for the opportunity to learn from them every day. There is always someone I can talk to and someone new to meet. Sometimes, when I step into The Spot, it feels like a community more than just a university.

I won’t lie; I’m excited to graduate as much as I’m anxious about the future. I’d love to stay in Melbourne after graduation at the end of the year but instead, I also find myself dreaming of returning to Kuala Lumpur. Currently, I’m still unsure of where my future lies but how lucky am I to be able to call two places home!”
