“It’s been almost 3 years since I graduated from MBS with a Master of Management (Marketing) degree and the experience has been invaluable.

The knowledge that I learned helped me develop a much deeper understanding and appreciation for the field.

However, coming from a retail banking background, I had no marketing experience whatsoever, and this was definitely a challenge that I had to overcome in order to secure a career within my chosen field.

Here are three key points that helped me on my journey to develop as a young professional and ultimately land me a career in marketing.

1. Define your “why” and be able to clearly express this. The answer is never “because I need a job” but something a whole lot deeper. Think about what gets you out of bed in the morning. Think about the reasons why you’ve chosen your particular field/industry and why you’re passionate about it. Think about the feeling of satisfaction you get when you’re doing something that you truly enjoy. All of this will form part of your “why”.

2. Take people on your journey. Everyone has reasons why they’re doing what they’re doing. It’s all about taking people on your journey to how you discovered your “why”. This can be done through storytelling – sharing your experiences leading to how you got to where you are, as well as where you hope your journey will take you.

3. Show your willingness and keenness to learn. If you’re applying for graduate programs, your prior experience and knowledge will be helpful, but it’s definitely not the be all and end all. Many companies want to be able to mould you into their business in order for you to develop and grow, so just show that you’re open to new experiences and just really want to learn.

If you keep those three key points in mind when applying for jobs (especially ones within your chosen field/industry) I have no doubt that you’ll succeed.”
